Although he wasn’t the first German explorer to cross this border into Rwanda, at 30 years of age, Richard Kandt crossed the border to Rwanda for the first time in June 1898 and he reached Rweru and the Akagera river which is between Rwanda and Burundi. By the time he arrived at this place, explorers like Dr. Oscar Bauman and Count Gustav-Adolf von Goetzen had crossed this border in 1892 and 1894 respectively.

Kandt reached this area during his search for the source of the Nile and during his time in this area, he decided to first meet the Rwandan King whose residence was Mukingo near Gatagara but he only met a pseudo king during this visit and was not given the audience he expected at that time.

The lake Rweru is shared by both Rwanda and Burundi and has a total surface area of 100 km2, of which 80 km2 is in Burundi and 20 km2 in Rwanda. Its shoreline is about 76 km. The mean depth is around 2.1 m with a maximum of 3.9 m. Lake Rweru is surrounded by marshes and papyrus and has floating islands with the main attractions in the area being sightseeing, bird watching since it poses a variety of water bird species that many tourists would be happy to see.
